Across multiple IPCC assessment cycles, primary observational datasets and peer-reviewed attribution studies conclude that recent global warming cannot be explained by known natural variability and natural external forcings alone, and that human greenhouse gas emissions are the dominant driver. Public debate often still treats the question as open. Scientific work continues to refine estimates of individual forcings and uncertainties — especially for regional changes and specific extreme weather events — but the overall finding on human influence on long-term global warming is stable.

Confidence — current state

Attribution does not assume natural variability away. It compares observations against expected responses to greenhouse gases, aerosols, solar variability, and internal climate variability using fingerprint analyses, climate model experiments, greenhouse gas measurements (including carbon isotope and oxygen evidence of anthropogenic CO2 growth), and paleoclimate context. Across that body of evidence, observed warming since roughly 1950 is assessed as much larger than expected from natural forcings and internal variability alone. Remaining debate primarily concerns the precise magnitude of individual contributions, regional impacts, and event-level attribution — not whether humans have driven the long-term warming.
